The ritual

Three minutes, done properly

The order matters more than the quantity. Follow it for two weeks and week three is when other people start noticing.

Soak
01

Soak

Once a week, twenty minutes

A generous handful of salts under running water so they dissolve before you get in. Water just past warm, never hot — heat strips the oils you are about to put back. Magnesium does its work in the last ten minutes, so do not cut it short.

Scrub
02

Scrub

Twice a week, never daily

Work in circles towards the heart on damp skin, and rinse without soap so the butters whipped into the scrub stay where they landed. Elbows, knees and shins take a second pass. If you shaved that morning, wait a day.

Seal
03

Seal

Within three minutes of the shower

While the skin still holds water. This is the whole trick, and it matters more than the amount you use. Warm the oil between your palms first so it melts rather than drags. Oil for warm months, more of it when the air turns dry.

Scalp
04

Scalp

The night before you wash

Part the hair into sections and work the oil into the scalp itself, not the lengths. Five minutes of massage — the point is circulation as much as the oil. Leave it in overnight and rinse out in the morning.

Cream and caramel swirled together

Week two

Unrefined butters work cumulatively. Nothing dramatic happens on day one — and anything that promises otherwise is doing it with silicones.

Ingredient glossary

What goes in

Every ingredient we use, what it does, and where it comes from.

Unrefined shea

Butyrospermum parkii

Unrefined shea

Bought unrefined from a women’s cooperative, so it still smells faintly nutty. Seals water into the skin rather than sitting on top of it.

In: Whipped Body Scrub, Body Oil
Pink halite and Epsom

Halite & magnesium sulphate

Pink halite and Epsom

Coarse pink halite dissolves slowly and softens the water; Epsom carries the magnesium that takes the ache out of a long day standing.

In: Bath Salts
Cane sugar

Saccharum officinarum

Cane sugar

Rounded grain that dissolves as you work it, so it cannot over-scrub. Gentler than salt on freshly shaved skin.

In: Whipped Body Scrub
Bhringraj

Eclipta alba

Bhringraj

Infused into sesame oil over three weeks rather than added as an extract. The traditional scalp herb, and the reason the hair oil smells of the kitchen rather than a salon.

In: Hair Oil
Sweet almond

Prunus amygdalus dulcis

Sweet almond

A light carrier oil that absorbs fast. It keeps the whip spreadable and stops the formula feeling heavy on the skin.

In: Body Oil, Whipped Body Scrub
Vitamin E

Tocopherol

Vitamin E

A natural antioxidant that keeps the oils from turning before the jar is finished. The only reason we can skip a preservative system.

And what never does

What never goes in

  • Mineral oil
  • Parabens
  • Synthetic dye
  • Microplastic beads
  • Added water
  • Animal testing

There is no water in any formula, which is why none of them need a preservative system.
